All the great vegan stuff

The Commoner - Fitzroy

So, we have been to The Commoner on Johnson St Fitzroy a few times, (last night being the most recent), and with a bit of warning (we gave them 1 hour last night) they will supply you with one of the best meals!

It was a balmy 31degrees on the way there, by the time we got there we were pretty warm!

The Commoner had 2 cocktail specials for the warm weather 'Moscow Mule with Lime Sorbet' and 'Smack in the Chops', I opted for a 'Smack in the Chops' ... no regrets there! 2 scoops of Strawberry Sorbet, Mint, 2 shots of Vodka, and topped up with Sparkling Wine, by crikey it was delicious! a big alcoholic kick followed through with a beautiful sweet strawberry flavour and sparkling the whole way, the best thing is that it got better and better as I got down the glass! M'Lady had a glass of Lanson which she hasn't tried before and was quite smitten with it.
I need to start taking my camera out more often, but I do feel a bit prattish sometimes.

We just asked the delightfully pleasant staff to just feed us, they told us a price and roughly how much food we would get with option of ordering more as we went along.

First Wave
Mount Zero Olives
House made Focaccia with toasted sesame seeds and olive oil
Housemade Crostini and Baba Ganoush

Second Wave
Radish with Dill and lemon
Pickled Vegetables
Witloof and Green Tomatoes

Third Wave
Radicchio on grilled bread with a Harissa

Forth Wave
Salad of Tomatoes and Lettuce with walnuts, pomegranate and green apple

We were stuffed! It does seem like a very high amount of bread products but everything was perfectly balanced.
There is a focus on fresh ingredients and making everything from scratch, there is a real labour of love in the food here.
Their bread is some of the best around!
M'Lady isn't a fan of Witloof and Radicchio but when it was combined with the rest of the dish she was snatching it up!
After last night, I have decided to try and do my own pickling and fresh pickling (using more quality vinegars in fresh dishes), I really loved the pickled vegetables, and it will tie in nicely with our newly formed Zero Food Packaging policy!

During the course of the meal we also ordered another glass of Lanson and a Grey Goose Gibson
that was an excellent Gibson an unexpected sweetness and I do have a fondness for pickled onions!

If you have never been to The Commoner I highly recommend it! DO IT! DOOOOO IIIIIIIIT!

Bress Wine and Cider is absolutely Vegan

I heard back from Adam Marks, the Winemaker at Bress and their wines are absolutely Vegan!

There is NO fining in their wines at all, in fact he said that it is against his principles in regards to Winemaking

Keep an eye out for their Wines and Ciders, they are FANTASTIC!
2010 Silver Chook Harcourt Valley Rose Cabernets

Linda McCartney Foods Sausages

I went to Thomas Dux in Port Melbourne the other day (which is a pretty good Deli/Supermarket) and I found Linda McCartney Foods Sausages

Well...
Holy shit they are easily the best Vegan Sausages I have ever eaten! If you see them get them!
They have a really nice batter light batter on them that just brings them up and beyond their competitors.
I reckon the Sausages would lend them selves nicely to a multitude of cooking styles but definately best BBQ'd or Pan Fried
I have just been flicking through the LMcC Foods website and I hope to be able to try more of their dishes.

Buy Vegan Wine AND support Edgars Mission or a charity of your choice

We ordered an assorted dozen of Vegan wine from Goodwill Wine and it arrived today in a timely fashion (2 days!)
Edgar's Mission Farm Sanctuary
So the deal is, Goodwill Wine sell cheap delicious wine and 50% of their profit goes to a charity of your choice (they have 15 listed charities but you can choose your personal favourite too)
We personally choose Edgars Mission who rescue farm animals, because we are sansvehicle and can't get out there to support them
Hit It!
BTW: We cracked open the Rose as soon as we got home and it is BLOODY delicious

Gasometer. The BEST Vegan Pub Food in Melbourne!

So I have been meaning to go to Gasometer since I saw a review on Broadsheet.

Last Friday, after work, I finally went there, along with Some Sheila and the Blue Blazer...
ZOIKS!
Gasometer delivers (not in the sit on your fat arse at home way). There's about 1/4 of the food menu that is Vegan!
Between us we ordered:

Cinnamon Almonds (these were ok, but I shouldn't have... you'll see why)
Fried Stuffed Olives (a very yum little snack, crumbed olives stuffed with Vegan Cheese)
Smokey Tofu Strips (ZOMG! probably 500gm smokey chilli fried tofu... SO so so delicious)
Vegan Chorizo Burger (Blue Blazer and I had these, very delicious)
Ok just so you know, the burger was served with fries... these were easily the best fries I have ever had! and I'm a Chip Nazi.

Once we had finished this fare, we were all stuffed, regretfully!
There at the bottom of the menu:

Vegan Pumpkin Pie with Gingerbread Ice Cream WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

We will absolutely be heading back, probably quite regularly

Just clear something up, I really like the food at East Brunswick Club, but Gasometer has brought the bar up waaaay above EBC's head, although I left feeling full I didn't feel bogged down like I do when I leave EBC.

Nice one

Macadamia Bliss - Pistachio Vegan Nougat

Tofu rancheros @ trippy taco

Tofu_rancheros

Who knew dinner for breakfast could be so good! I could eat trippy taco everyday! The best chipotle, the best salsa, best tortilla, best Tofu.

Funky Curry on Bourke St

We would go past this Indian restaurant on Bourke St on the tram and scoff at the crap name... Well today we were hungry and nearby sonar decided to give it a go, well we ended up eating our words because I would say that it was the best curry I've had in Melbourne! It's not far from work so it will probably become a staple.
Vegans can have most of the vege curries sans paneer of course and we can have the parathas and samosas. Yum!
They have 3 locations in the city which I will update shortly.
